Criteria for Scholarship:

All Applicants must:
  • Reside in the Jefferson County Bessemer Cut-Off area
  • Be a graduating high school Senior entering a post-graduate institution (4-Year, 2-year, or vocational school) in the year in which the scholarship application is submitted
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism in the local community
  • Have a 2.5 or higher GPA
  • Be accepted to an accredited post-graduate institution

Lawson State Community College Humanities and Fine Arts Department Scholarship


Who: LSCC is excited to offer several full tuition scholarships for incoming freshman majoring in Fine Arts with a focus on Art Studio, Art Education, Graphic Design, and/or Art History.
Deadline: March 30,2018 


Be sure to follow the application instructions on this LINK.  If you have a 3.0 GPA or higher, you should apply for both an Academic and Art Scholarship by selecting both boxes.

About: Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to Alabama students. Students from across the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals, and motivation in school and community activities. Boys State week is a full and active week held on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

American Legion Auxiliary: Girls State

American Legion Auxiliary: Girls State

When: June 10-15, 2018.

About:Alabama Girls State is a week-long, fun-filled, hands-on learning opportunity for some of the best and brightest young women in the State of Alabama. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), Alabama Girls State is a premier youth leadership program which offers a one-of-a-kind experience to its delegates. 

Who:
  • Be a legal inhabitant of the United States. Participants must provide a copy of their U.S. birth certificate or their U.S. government-issued documentation verifying they are in the United States legally, e.g. green card or visa.
  • Have completed their junior year in high school and have at least one more semester remaining before graduation.
  • Be keenly interested in government and current events.
  • Have high moral character.
  • Show strong leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrate above-average scholastic achievement.

National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security – Diplomacy, Intelligence & Defense

Jefferson State Singers Scholarship


To be eligible for a Jefferson State Singers Scholarship students must:
  •  be selected by audition to participate with the group.
  •  enroll as a full-time student at Jefferson State Community College.
  •  have/maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
  •  remain in good standing with the college.
  •  meet attendance requirements at rehearsals and performances.
  •  either read music or take the class MUS 110 (where this skill is taught).

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Scholarship Program

Applicants to the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Scholarship Program must be: 

  • High school seniors from the following areas in Alabama: Jefferson County and Tuscaloosa County, who plan to enroll in a full-time** undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school by the fall term following the application period.
  Or: 
  • High school seniors who are dependent children* of full-time Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. Team Members who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Jefferson State Counselor's Scholarship Award

Jefferson State Community College scholarships are open to students entering as freshman. The requirements for the Jefferson State Counselor's Scholarship Award are:


  • Must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher at the end of their 1st semester senior year;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or provide proper residency status;
  • Must have completed an admissions application to Jefferson State for the Fall 2018 semester. 


  • Deadline for nomination is April 1, 2018

    Herb Hanes-Bill Sparks Scholarship

    The Ensley High School Alumni Association, Inc. is receiving applications for the Herb Hanes-Bill Sparks Scholarship.  The scholarship, in the amount of $2,500.00, will be paid to any Alabama College or university of winner’s choice to be used for tuition and books.

    To qualify for the Hanes-Sparks Scholarship, the graduating senior applicant must have:
    1. Participated in varsity athletics or in an athletic related activity (cheerleader, trainer, dance team, etc) at a Jefferson or Shelby County, Alabama High School.
    2. Been accepted into a four-year Alabama college or university.
    3. Completed all required forms.

    ASCE Birmingham Branch Scholarships

    The ASCE Birmingham Branch is pleased to offer three scholarships this year.  Details and eligibility for the available ASCE Birmingham Branch Scholarships are found on the link below. 
    The deadline to apply is March 31.


    1. Must attend a civil engineering program at an Alabama University/College that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology - Engineering Accreditation Commission (ABET-EAC).
    2. Is in a position to accept the scholarship in year awarded.
    3. Is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. and a resident of Blount, Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Cullman, Etowah, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Randolph, Talledega, or Walker County in the State of Alabama.
    4. Must be a high school graduating senior entering freshman year of college.
    5. Must complete this application by the deadline and submit all the required information on this application form. Additional pages will not be considered.

    The American Legion Oratorical Contest

    “A constitutional speech contest” The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students.


    High school students under age 20 are eligible. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition. Legion department representatives certify one winner per state to the national contest, where department winners compete against each other in two speaking rounds. The contest caps off with a final round that decides the three top finishers.

    AABE Premier Award in Energy

    The Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy® (AABE) has begun its scholarship program for 2018. AABE is an organization of energy professionals dedicated to ensure the input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussion and development of energy policies, regulations, R&D technologies and environmental issues. One of the purposes of AABE is to encourage minority students to pursue careers in energy-related fields and to provide scholarships for such students. 

    The AABE Birmingham Scholarship Program consists of two (2) distinct scholarship opportunities:

     1.  The Premier Award of $5,000 is awarded to a high school senior with a GPA of B or better who demonstrates superior achievement and community involvement. 


    2.  The Principal’s Choice Award of $750 is awarded to a striving C-student who exhibits potential for success in college. Applicants for this award must be recommended by their attending school’s principal or assistant principal in the form of a letter to be submitted to AABE.


    Alabama Agribusiness Council Foundation Scholarship

    The AACF Scholarship was created to provide students enrolled in a four-year institution located within the state of Alabama majoring in a field of study that will prepare the student for a career in agriculture or agribusiness with financial assistance to help support their study.
